Durham, NC History

Durham arose out of a need in the 19th-century railroad industry in which the current location of Durham was prime real estate for a depot between Raleigh and Hillsborough. The North Carolina Railroad depot was established in 1849 on land that was donated by Dr. Bartlett S. Durham. On April 26, 1853, a US Post Office was established and the date is now recognized as the city’s birthday. The town was incorporated in 1869 as the population increased due to the railroad station. Twelve years later, in 1881, Durham County was established and ratified.
